Things to Do in Chicago

Millenium Park "Bean"

There are so many things to do in Chicago it's impossible to mention them all! But here are a few suggestions we have.

Millenium Park
Millenium Park is a great park on Michigan Avenue in the heart of downtown. Check out the Cloud Gate sculpture (referred to affectionately as the Bean) and the Crown Fountain. Nature fans, be sure to seek out the Lurie Garden, too.

Michigan Avenue
North Michigan Avenue, from about Chicago Ave south to Wacker Drive, has great shopping and people-watching. For the best view from way up high, check out the Hancock Observatory. Or instead of spending your $12 on a ticket for the observatory, spend it on a martini at the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock building.

Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago is an amazing art museum. We highly recommend it, but give yourself a lot of time - that place is huge!

Museum of Science and Industry
The Museum of Science and Industry is a fun interactive science museum. This one's great for the kids, but not just for them. We went there just last year and had a great time.

The Museum Campus
The Museum Campus is a 57-acre park located just south of Soldier Field. There you can find the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Shedd Aquarium.

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise
The CAF River Cruise is one of Karen's favorite touristy things to do in Chicago. This cruise takes you on a 90-minute cruise on the Chicago River, while the guide describes the world class architecture along the route. Tickets are $30 on weekends and $28 on weekdays, and it is highly recommended that you purchase them in advance through Ticketmaster or the CAF website.

Chicago White Sox
The White Sox play on the south side of Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field (still called Comiskey Park by many locals). The weekend of the wedding they are playing at home.

Wrigley Field
The hated rivals of the White Sox, the north sider Cubs, are out of town that weekend. But a trip to Wrigley Field and the surrounding neighborhood, Wrigleyville, is fun for baseball fans.

Hot Doug's
Hot Doug's, the Sausage Superstore and Encased Meats Emporium, is the greatest place to get hot dogs and sausages in a city renowned for such artery-cloggers. Hot Doug's purveyor, Doug (natch) not only serves great Chicago style dogs and cheese fries, but also creates amazing gourmet sausages and duck fat fries. Just ask Karen's brother Mark - he can't come visit us without including a trip to Hot Doug's.
